CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB / WSHM) – You may have noticed that the price of meat has gone up or that some meats are hard to find.
“I want to have a product to sell to restaurants and colleges that want to order it from me and if I don’t have it, I can’t sell it to them,” said Larry Katz, owner of Arnold’s Meats.
Katz told Western Mass News how difficult the current meat shortage is for her business. One particularly difficult meat to obtain is turkey, which could have an impact on the upcoming holiday season.
“We deal with about five different companies for turkeys. They already wanted our Thanksgiving orders coming up and as long as we place them now we shouldn’t have a problem, ”Katz noted.
One of the most popular items is chicken thighs. They’re also one of the hardest items to find and when they’re on the shelves, they go quickly.
“On the items that people have to repackage, like frozen cut chicken breast and things that take a lot of work because they don’t have any help,” Katz explained.
Katz said food manufacturers struggle to find employees like many other industries. He broke down some of the current price differences.
“Boneless prime rib, they’re up a dollar a pound from last year. If you take nets, they’ve increased by almost five dollars a pound. In one week, they increased by five dollars a pound a year ago, ”Katz explained.
Katz said the shortages and higher prices don’t mean there is a supply problem. “Everything is work. It’s not that they don’t have the product. They don’t have the people to make the product, ”he added.
